Our contribution to Handsome Frank's Instabrief exhibition that was shown at the Print Space gallery in London 5-9 May 2017.
For the exhibition Handsome Frank invited followers to submit Instagram posts, every artist then got a chance to select images that we felt inspired by to use as our brief for our artwork.
Our piece was inspired by this post by @travelnotepad https://www.instagram.com/p/BRe5bIBFL1B/
We hand inked the custom lettering and then recreated the design stitch by stitch onto fabric using cotton thread trying to capture the painterly loose brushstrokes.

Cotton embroidery thread on cotton fabric.
Hand embroidered double-sided on one piece of fabric. The front reads "Don't Worry Be Happy" the back reads "It's All Fucked". For the SFW (Safe for work/So Fucking What) group exhibition in Hong Kong.
In this double sided embroidery the positive and negative messages are contained within each other. Often self help/uplifting quotes can seem a little overly positive and off-puttingly earnest so we wanted to create a tongue in cheek response to that stereotype. Everything is all fucked so you may as well try not to worry and be happy while you can.
Hand embroidered cotton thread on cotton fabric, double sided, 2016

Special MARCS x Maricor/Maricar collaboration for Summer 2017. We love summer and all the good things it means to us - sunny days, glazed donuts, lazy weekend fry ups and dripping ice-cream melting too fast to eat.
We used these as inspiration for our capsule collection creating two signature prints and a series of graphics that feature on iconic MARCS silk shirts, dresses, tops and miniskirt.
You can view and buy pieces from the collection here
We created a custom painted backdrop that was used for the campaign shoot and at the MARCS Pitt St flagship store. You can see Maricor creating it in the behind the scenes video below (produced by Knack studios).
Massive thanks to Nadia, Emma and the team at Marcs for this dream project!
We worked on a lovely Mothers Day campaign for Myer this year celebrating all mothers for being unique and special. Myer asked us to craft 26 names including Emma, Jasmine and Li with our hand embroidery as well as our own beautiful mother's name Filomena, which starred in the campaign. The embroidered names and full alphabet were then used across print, web and broadcast with Flutter creating a wonderful animated spot based on our intricate stitching.
Here is a making of video. We answer a few questions about the campaign and what Mothers day means to us on the Myer blog.

Two part artwork we created for the "White" group exhibition held at Usagi Gallery, Hong Kong, curated by Risa Nakawaza.

Second piece in the Secret Garden series, Maricor/Maricar work primarily with embroidery which is distinct in its capturing of time. Each stitch is deliberate and marks the time spent in working a piece up stitch by stitch, accumulating time as it grows. They are interested in the minute elements that make up a whole and the quiet beauty that hides in the details.

We teamed up with London based Crossconnor to create a tongue in cheek series of hand embroidered patches designed to interact with well known fashion brands such as Lacoste and Paul Smith.
Stephen Cross and Simon Connor - creative directors from Karmarama - approached us last year with their concept. “The idea originated as a way of commemorating Steve Irwin, but quickly grew into something bigger. These patches allow the wearer to create narratives, make a statement, and have fun with iconic brand logos”

Our UK agents Handsome Frank organised an exhibition with a twist. Each artist was a given a brief that was tweeted online, suggested by their twitter followers. We chose this brief from @ejikeanyanwu 'A balloon full of multiple colours of paint, burst by a bullet, spilling onto a blank canvas. Represents creativity.' We've explored water colour gradients in our work before but have wanted to experiment more with thick paint textures and splatters so had a lot of fun with this brief. Handsome Frank have posted up the exhibition in its entirety on their blog.
Untitled pieces
Maricor and I took part in the Sydney etcc exhibition. "etcc is a series of exhibitions that are remixed and remixable –legally." Each artist was asked to create work remixing or re-interpreting a creative commons image. We were inspired by a photograph of an Antoni Gaudi mosaic and his appropriation of broken or discarded ceramics in its creation.
We decided to adopt the idea of using remnants in our process and incorporated leftover threads from previous projects in the design. Also where threads ended we continued on with fresh colours to echo the broken tiles of the Gaudi mosaic.
